Project 2025, a 900-page presidential transition project for the next Republican president, plans to rip healthcare away from most Americans, specifically women (~51%) and trans people (~5%). The plan was spearheaded by The Heritage Foundation and at least 140 members of Presidential candidate Donald Trump’s former administration.
However, Trump has claimed he “knows nothing” about Project 2025, despite the plan being built around the possibility of him becoming president.
Trump is notorious for his opposition to healthcare, whether that be abortion access or gender-affirming care for trans people. One of his proudest moments was getting Roe v. Wade overturned on June 4, 2022. He has campaigned for years about appointing judges who would overturn it — and he did just that.
Trump appointed three Supreme Court justices in his first term: Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett. With GOP justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas in office, the Republican majority on the Supreme Court opposed access to abortion and overturned Roe v. Wade in the case Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. They left abortion access up to the states, meaning people in GOP-ruled states would no longer have reproductive equality. This led to nearly a third of US women living without access to abortion care.
Furthermore, these bans have a particularly severe impact on BIPOC women and those living in poverty. Women from low-income backgrounds often lack the financial resources necessary to travel long distances — in some cases, thousands of miles — to access essential, life-saving healthcare services. This challenge is worsened for BIPOC women, particularly Black women, who have historically faced systemic abuse and neglect regarding reproductive health care throughout the entirety of U.S. history. The recent legislation has bolstered these existing disparities, further marginalizing these groups and making it even more difficult for them to seek the care they need and deserve.
Additionally, a large portion of Donald Trump’s campaign has centered on anti-trans rhetoric. In his campaign ads, he has promised to end gender-affirming care in jails and prisons, along with restricting access to care in general. Furthermore, he has always been vocal about preventing trans women from participating in sports and plans to outlaw trans people from the military.
One of his biggest issues, though, is gender-affirming care for minors. Trump plans to ban this care for all minors nationwide, despite the American Academy of Pediatrics having done extensive research proving this healthcare is safe and necessary, calling it “best practice.” They have banned gender-affirming care for minors overall in 24 states and gender-affirming surgeries for minors in two. This means 40% of trans youth in America are being deprived of important and lifesaving healthcare. With Trump back in power, this number stands to be even higher.
Now that America has re-elected Donald Trump, we can expect an influx of legislation restricting access to healthcare and threatening individual bodily autonomy. This legislation would deeply impact the rights and liberties of the majority of citizens, creating difficulties in accessing essential medical services and making their own decisions about their bodies. This legislation already exists in many states, but in the second Trump presidency, it may only become more detrimental, as he would enact nationwide abortion and healthcare bans that could result in the deaths of millions of Americans.
